Lifting the Lid on Box Hill
With the kind co-operation of the Ministry of Defence, we are able to lift the ‘secret lid’ on Box Hill and take you on a video tour of the never publicly seen Tunnel Quarry in Corsham, Wiltshire. Tunnel Quarry was one of the United Kingdom’s central ammunition depots. Conceived in the mid-1930’s to hide from the enemy over 100,000 tons of bombs, shells, cordite and small arms ammunition that the country depended upon to win the Second World War. Thanks to the legacy of Isambard Kingdom Brunel and the local Bathstone quarrymasters and quarrymen, over 100 acres of underground passageways and chambers were converted by hundreds of men, under the leadership of the Royal Engineers, into an ammunition magazine storage area of gargantuan proportions with unique architecture.

Secret Underground Cities
by Nick McCamley
  Secret State
by Peter Hennessy
Outlines the operational impact of some catastrophic wartime disasters at ammunition depots and describes the system of decoys and camouflage used to disguise the surface features at Corsham.

Hennessy has been able to piece together all the retaliation procedures had a nuclear strike been launched against Britain. The picture that emerges is surprisingly reassuring; many of the documents are couched by the military and Whitehall of the 50s and 60s.
Cold War Secret Nuclear Bunkers
by Nick McCamley
  Secret Underground Bristol

A survey of the huge range of underground command bunkers and secret (and not-so-secret) radar stations built by the North Atlantic Allies to keep the USSR at bay throughout the cold-war.

Plunge in to the secret world beneath your feet, down mysterious tunnels and hidden waterways, caves and grottoes, mines and nuclear bunkers. The most popular book ever written about the city packed with the latest information.

Saving Britain's Art Treasures - by Nick McCamley
Pressure from Churchill, Beaverbrook and others forces the Treasury into developing Westwood Quarry near Bradford on Avon as a joint repository for the V&A and the British Museum. The book deals with the construction of the repository and the transfer of billions of pounds worth of artefacts into the subterranean vault.

Disasters Underground - by Nick McCamley
On 27 November 1944 the underground RAF bomb store at Fauld in Staffordshire exploded, destroying two farms and much of the village of Scropton, killing seventy men and women in an instant. Approximately 4,000 tons of bombs had exploded en-mass in the mine, which was some ninety feet below ground, leaving a crater nearly half-a-mile in diameter.
